Glaucoma drainage devices (GDDs) remain a useful and relevant part of glaucoma surgeons’ armamentarium. The first device—the Molteno, named after its inventor—was developed in the late 1960s. It was followed by the Krupin (not commercially available now) in 1976, the Baerveldt in the 1990s, the Ahmed in 1993, and most recently, the PAUL® Glaucoma Implant developed in 2017. All these devices shared the basic objective of achieving a sustained intraocular pressure lowering for glaucoma control. This chapter presents current knowledge and evidence on GDDs as well as the important factors affecting their success and failure.
